The ABC of Bedding

JONATHAN ADLER

Sleeping in bed is the most rejuvenating part of a person's life. So a comfortable bed and bedding that complements the overall bedroom décor is a must. Since bed sheets are the most visible part of a bed, high quality bed sheets can make quite a difference to the visual appeal and comfort level of the room.

Here are a few tips on choosing the right kind of bedsheets:

While most of the mattresses come in standard sizes such as 'King-sized', 'Queen-sized' and 'Full-sized', the customized mattresses with pillow tops and other accessories attached to them can make them larger and wider.

Thus, it is better to measure the bed and the mattress size that you use beforehand, so that the bedsheets you buy are of appropriate sizes.

Cotton bedsheets are the most popular ones though one can use flannel and cotton mixed fabrics as bedsheets depending on our taste.

On the high end of fashion and comfort level, satins and silks with their soft feel on skin win almost every romantic heart.
Colours and designs of the bedsheets should match the overall theme and colour scheme of the room, though it can have a deeper hue than the colour of the walls.

Do you remember when all bed sheets were white cotton? If so, you're probably amazed at how many options are on the market now. You can add colour, style, and pattern to your bedroom with the newest bedding. Choose Cotton or Blends, Flannel, Silk, or Satin
For sheets you'll sleep on every day, treat yourself.

Choose the best you can afford. After all, you'll hopefully spend 8 hours a day lying on them! Cotton is the most popular sheet fabric, but some people prefer non-wrinkling cotton blends.

For luxury, choose satin, silk, or microfibre. You might buy a pair of pillowcases in different styles and see which you like best, how they feel to sleep on, how they wash.

Remember that many sheets will shrink as much as 7% in the first washing.

Buy More Bed Sheets Than You Need
If you've spent a lot of time deciding on what bed sheets to buy, you won't want to have to do it again soon. Consider buying two or three sets that are identical so you can trade off. If something spills on the bottom sheet, you can replace just that. If someone puts a foot through the top sheet, you won't have to start over. And be sure to add extra pillow cases for freshness.

Check the Laundering Instructions
Silk sheets are sensuous and wonderful, but will you have to have them dry cleaned each week? Can you afford that? Be sure that you'll be able to care for your new bed sheets the way the manufacturer recommends. They'll last longer.

And if you have any problem,
Call me , lets talk about what you should do and know before you spend your money to buy new bed sheets.

Not so cool to buy your sheets in Lagos traffic, discuss it first with me and get the best!

Its my job, i will get you the best sheets in town, delivered to your door!

HOW TO USE A DUVET COVER

When my clients order for Duvets, I usually ask do you want a duvet with a cover.  The next thing I get is what’s that, I sha want a duvet.

What is a bed duvet cover?A duvet cover is a large slip cover or shell that your duvet will slide into easily. Using a duvet cover is similar to using a pillowcase except much bigger. One mistake people make when buying a duvet cover, is that you have to get one that is one size larger than your duvet so the duvet cover will slide on easily and have enough room.

Duvet covers offer great benefits to keeping your inside duvet clean. It is much easier to wash your duvet cover instead cleaning the entire duvet every time someone spills or drops food. (Do not eat on your bed). Duvet covers are very convenient to use for your bed, especially if you have small children. Food or drink messes can quickly be taken care of by changing the duvet cover and washing immediately.

Also, try a pretty duvet cover for the guest bedroom. Your guests will always have fresh, clean bedding with decorative benefits. Duvet covers have decorative benefits too. You can change your bedroom design quickly by adding a new duvet cover that is full of colour. If you are tired of your plain old duvet, adding a duvet cover is the way to go.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR BED LINENS

When you go to buy bed linens, you can find lots of different colours, patterns and fabrics. As many different choices available, there are as many different ways of caring for them. Colours must be protected and material must be treated just right.
But you don't need to be puzzled about how to care for each of your choices.
It's a great idea to save the care instructions wrapped with every piece of bed linen, Yet beyond specific instructions are some general, common sense tips for purchasing, cleaning, and caring for sheets, pillow cases, and other bed linens
Below, I've listed general tips on cleaning and caring for your bed linens.

Bed Sheets
·          Washing
o    Wash the linens in cool water, No need for hot water.
o    Using a washing machine, Set wash cycle on "gentle." The sheets aren't really dirty.
o    Use the extra rinse cycle if available in order to remove any detergent residue.
o    Use less detergent than usual. (Our Nigerian detergents are very strong and your sheets aren't too dirty.)
o    Avoid using bleach since it breaks down fabric fibers.

·          Drying
o    Avoid over drying, you’ll have many wrinkles.
o    Remove sheets from the dryer promptly and fold immediately. Hand press to remove excess wrinkles.
o    For a crisp neat-looking bed, iron all bed linens.
Pillow Cases
·         If you find pillow cases that you particularly love, buy a few extra. Pillow cases wear out more quickly than sheets.
·         Iron pillowcases for fresh, crisp good looks on your bed.
·         Change pillowcases at least once in two weeks in normal climates, once a week  in hot and humid regions.
Storage
·         It's a great idea to have at least three sets of sheets per bed.
·         Rotate the sheets sets you use (vs. the sets you store) frequently so they wear evenly.

·         Change sheets once in two weeks in normal climates, more often in hot and humid regions.

With this handy tips, No one has any excuse as to why they do not have a clean, durable and comfortable bed.

KNOW YOUR BEDDING MATERIAL - POLYESTER!

Polyester is a man-made and natural fiber produced from polymers which contain the ester functional group in their main chain. Polyester sheets are often found in motels and hotels, where durability and cleanliness is preferred. Normally polyester sheets and bedding is scratchy, stiff and inexpensive. Polyester is more likely used as filler in blends of cotton sheets.

ADVANTAGES
  • It’s inexpensive.
  • Polyester is machine washable and quick-drying
  •  It is a strong fiber and is resistant to sun-fade.
  •  It may be made as a thin fiber which can be woven into thin fabric mimicking the appearance of expensive fabrics such as silk or cotton.
  •  At a medium-woven weight, it is wrinkle resistant.

DISADVANTAGES
  • It does not breathe.
  • It traps moisture between fabric layers.
  • It’s warms to touch and stays warm.
  • Polyester fabric will pill, it does not wick moisture away from the sleeper's skin.
  • Oil and grease stains tend to set permanently.

Tell us, does the pros outweigh the cons for you?

KNOW YOUR BEDDING MATERIAL - SILK!

Silk is a completely different type of material compared to traditional duvet fillings and as a result is not measured by the traditional tog system. Silk duvets are thin and are designed to allow air to flow more freely thus regulating your body's heat. The result is your body stays cool during the hot season and warm during wet season.
Silk duvets keep you comfortable over a wider range of temperatures, unlike down or polyester which is fairly tog specific and because it is naturally hypo-allergenic, it is an alternative for people who suffer from allergies.

There are different types of silk used in silk sheets. These includes: Charmeuse , Tussah, and Habotai (often called China Silk). Charmeuse Silk and Habotai silk are produced from the mulberry silk worm. They differ in feel and luster with Charmeuse silk having a high luster and less friction, and Habotai silk having a sandy matte finish. Tussah silk is produced from wild silk worms and is generally considered to be of lower quality. Tussah Silk usually has visual impurities from the fabrics finish and will often have knots in the texture due to broken silk fibers.

ADVANTAGES
  • Being a natural product is breathable and so enables your body to maintain a more stable temperature
  • Silk is the perfect choice for people who suffer from allergies, in particular common dust related allergies such as asthma
  • It also provides relief for those who suffer skin afflictions and aching joints.

DISADVANTAGES
  • It’s expensive.
  • It comes mostly in solid colours which doesn't give you variety.

Tell us, does the pros outweigh the cons for you?
